Terms of Service

Last updated 14 October 2026

Tilo is run by Michael Riddell, a sole trader in New Zealand, trading as Tilo (“we”, “us”). These terms are the agreement between us and the business that signs up for Tilo (“you”, “your store”).

By creating an account you agree to these terms on behalf of your business, and confirm you have the authority to do so. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information.

1. Who can use Tilo

Tilo is a point of sale for businesses in New Zealand, and for the staff they add. The person who signs up becomes the account owner. You must give us accurate details when you sign up and keep them up to date.

2. Your account and your staff

  • The account owner controls the account: who has access, each person's role, the store's details and billing.
  • You're responsible for everything done under your store's logins and PINs. Each person must use their own login and PIN and keep them private, and you should turn off access for anyone who leaves.
  • Tell us straight away at support@tilo.co.nz if you think a login has been misused.

3. Your records and your legal obligations

Tilo is a tool to help you sell and keep records. It doesn't replace your own obligations, and you're responsible for:

  • your prices, products and the accuracy of everything you record;
  • your tax, including GST returns and keeping the records Inland Revenue requires;
  • your obligations to your customers under consumer law, such as refunds and guarantees;
  • if you sell firearms, ammunition or other restricted items, checking licences and keeping the records the Arms Act 1983 and its regulations require. Tilo's licence checks and its connection to Gunwise are a help, not a guarantee, and Tilo doesn't report anything to Te Tari Pūreke (the Firearms Safety Authority) or the Police for you;
  • collecting and using your customers' personal information lawfully under the Privacy Act 2020, including telling them their details are kept in Tilo, and only emailing marketing to customers who've agreed to it.

4. Services you connect

You can connect other services to Tilo, such as your WooCommerce website, Gunwise, or a Windcave card terminal. When you do, we send and receive the information each one needs, as you've set it up. Your use of those services is under their own terms, and we aren't responsible for them being available or correct.

5. Free trial, subscription and payment

  • Tilo costs $249 NZD / month or $2,490 NZD / year. We aren't registered for GST, so no GST is charged. If we register, prices will include GST, and we'll tell you before any change.
  • New accounts start with a 7-day free trial. You add your payment details (a card, or a New Zealand bank account for direct debit) when you sign up, and nothing is taken until the trial ends. Cancel before then and you won't pay anything.
  • Your subscription renews automatically each month or year, and payment is taken at the start of each period. Payments are handled by Stripe; we never see or store your full card or bank account number. Direct debits are taken by Stripe New Zealand Limited under the direct debit authority you give when you add your bank account, and can take a few working days to clear.
  • If a payment fails, you keep full access for 7 days while you update your payment details. After that, Tilo is paused for your store until payment is made.
  • We may change our prices. We'll give you at least 30 days' notice by email, and the new price applies from your next renewal after that.

6. Cancelling

The account owner can cancel at any time in Settings › Billing. You keep full access until the end of the period you've already paid for. We don't give refunds for part-used months or years, unless the law requires it.

7. After your subscription ends

  • Tilo is paused for your store: nobody can use the till, and the account owner sees only Billing. Subscribing again restores everything straight away.
  • We keep your store's records for 7 years after your subscription ends, so you can meet your own record-keeping obligations, then permanently delete them. The account owner can ask for a copy of your records at any time, or ask us to delete them sooner, at support@tilo.co.nz. Before asking for early deletion, check how long the law requires you to keep your records.

8. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use Tilo for anything unlawful, or to record information you know is false;
  • send emails through Tilo that are unlawful or that customers haven't agreed to receive;
  • share logins, try to get around access limits, or interfere with Tilo's security or operation;
  • copy, resell or build a competing product from Tilo.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts other users or their information at risk. Where we reasonably can, we'll warn you first and give you a chance to fix it.

9. Requests from authorities

We'll only give your records to the Police or another authority when the law requires it, such as under a search warrant or production order. Where we're allowed to, we'll tell you about the request.

10. The service

  • We work to keep Tilo available, secure and backed up, but we can't promise it will never be interrupted. We may need short breaks for maintenance, and try to schedule them outside trading hours.
  • We improve Tilo over time and may change or remove features. If a change significantly reduces what you're paying for, we'll tell you in advance, and you can cancel.
  • Your records belong to you. We use them only to provide Tilo to you, as set out in our Privacy Policy.

11. Liability

  • You're using Tilo for business purposes, so the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 doesn't apply, and the parties agree that sections 9, 12A and 13 of the Fair Trading Act 1986 don't apply to the extent the law allows, as it's fair and reasonable for two businesses to agree.
  • To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits or sales, or loss arising from information you entered incorrectly or obligations you didn't meet.
  • To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For significant changes we'll email the account owner at least 30 days before they take effect. If you keep using Tilo after that, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, you can cancel.

13. New Zealand law

These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts can hear any dispute about them. If any part of them can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
